Timmermans candidate for EU Commission chairmanship

Frans Timmermans

Today Frans ‘Islam is our future‘ Timmermans will announce his candidacy for the chairman position of the European (EU) Commission, he aims to take this seat in the name of the European coalition of social democrats. The current vice chairman also wants to represent the Dutch Labour Party in the European Union elections in May.

Today Timmermans will be announcing that he will be running for this position, according to sources in Brussels. The announcement will take place in a cafe at around 17:00 in Heerlen (Limburg, The Netherlands), where Timmermans has lived before.

Yesterday it had become known that the Dutchman received the necessary support from other social democratic parties in other nations. He needs the support from 9 other nations. The German SPD is convinced that Timmermans will do really well in these elections. Timmermans will have one competitor in the social democratic elections, namely the Slovakian EU-commissar Maros Sefcovic.

Even if he would win this particular battle, nothing is certain. The Christian Democrat EVP faction is still the biggest faction in the EU parliament and has multiple candidates that could replace Jean-Claude Juncker. The German Manfred Weber and the former Finnish prime minister  Alexander Stubb.

Besides that, Timmermans (57) still needs the support from his own party, the Dutch Labour Party. Paul Tang, who spearheaded the party at the last European elections, wants to have another crack at it. So ultimately it will be the members of the Labour Party that will end up deciding who will be representing them.

To become the chairman of the European Commission not only will the support of the European Parliament be necessary, but it will ultimately be the heads of government making that decision.
