Spain takes in hundreds of migrants rescued off Libya

The Spanish Socialist government has given the green light this Saturday, 22nd of December on receiving hundreds of stranded migrants from Sub-Sahara Africa, picked up on the Libyan shores, after both the Maltese and Italian governments closed their ports to them.

Neither Libya, Tunisia or France responded to a request made from Spanish NGO Proactiva Open Arms to allow the docking of ‘311 men, women and children after popular Italy’s Interior Minister Salvini said the migrants are not welcome in his country as well.

UPDATE
As promised this morning, in Italy they will not disembark: to the NGO #OpenArms, with 311 migrants on board, headed to Spain, a good trip.
May the traffickers and their accomplices know that our ports are closed, STOP!

Open Arms NGO spokeswoman, Laura Lanuza said that the boat was headed towards Algeciras, near Gibraltar, a city where Vox, the nationalist, anti-migrant Spanish party had great results last regional elections with almost 20% of the city’s votes.

Spain in 2018 surpassed Italy in numbers of migrant arrivals after the Spanish socialist prime minister triggered a calling effect, by taking in more than 500 stranded migrants from the Aquarius NGO ship, seeing the numbers of arrivals increasing sharply as the ones in Italy dwindled.
