This is the story of an elderly widow in the Italian city of Castel Volturno. According to the police, an immigrant broke into the 74 years old woman’s apartment and raped her. The victim, while still in a state of shock and confusion, managed to call the police and the first thing she reported was that the culprit was a foreigner.
The President of the police trade union, Antonio de Lieto, expressed his frustration, which is shared with the majority of the police force, and said: “It is necessary to intervene without delays on the topic of sexual violence, in our view, it would be appropriate to consider applying an exemplary punishment: chemical castration, no ifs, and no buts.”
The Police Trade Union wanting harder punishments for rapists is a widely supported idea among Italian citizens and for this reason the Trade Union President De Lieto felt confident to direct his worries and ideas to the current government and went on saying: “We are certain that this Government will be able to apply the right corrective measures in order to restore the sacrosanct serenity for all the women, who for various reasons, find themselves alone in their homes or have to walk alone in the streets of their own cities”
Matteo Salvini, current Italian Interiors Minister, has always talked about the possibility of introducing chemical castration for rapists during his political career, he clearly endorses this kind of punishment. Hopefully, Minister Salvini will listen to the requests of the police force, who until now have felt quite powerless against the neverending waves of immigrant crimes.
