Court Decides That Alleged Former Bin Laden Bodyguard Must Be Brought Back to Germany

Sami A., a Tunisian Islamist, who is accused of formerly working as bodyguard of Osama Bin Laden and has been deported from Germany in the meantime, is to be brought back from Tunisia according a court decision. The court ruled that the deportation had been unlawful. Now the city of Bochum is supposed to bear the costs for the return flight and allow his return to Germany. His home country, however, has other plans.

The Tunisian authorities are responsible for Sami A., “The judgment has no consequences for us“, said a ministerial spokeswoman. Sami A. was briefly imprisoned after being deported from Germany, but has since been released. The Tunisian authorities are still investigating involvement in terrorist activities.

The Tunisian came to Germany in 1997 to study, but never completed a degree and lived in Bochum since 2005. The authorities classified him as a threat and as a consequence, he was deported several weeks ago.
